Stephanie
Abrams
began performing pantomime at the age of 13 after being introduced to
it by her high school drama coach. She studied mime intensly focusing on the illusionistic technique
of her idol Marcel Marceau. Her passion for mime grew, and she started developing her own pieces.
In 1995 she was awarded a Critic'c Choice Award for her original solo pantomime at the Thespian
Festival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She went on to win 4 more awards in 1996 including the prestigious District's
Choice for her solo piece Fatal Accident which she performed main stage at the International
Thespian Festival. In 1997 Stephanie decided to expand her skills and moved to San Francisco to train
at the San Francisco Circus
Center. Master teachers Lu Yi and Xia Ke Min encouraged her to focus on contortion and
began training her.
In 1998 Stephanie began her career
as a professional contortionist and spent the next 5 years performing around the Bay Area and abroad.
Eager to get back to her theatrical roots, in 2000 Stephanie founded Kinetic
Theory Experimental Theatre, an ensemble theatre company dedicated to mime and movement. The troupe's
debut show, written and directed by Stephanie, went on to win awards for "Best of Fringe" and "Best Mime
Ensemble" at the 2001 San Francisco
Fringe Festival. It was then that Stephanie's focus shifted to creating and directing original shows.
She continued her work with Kinetic Theory by night and by day served as Artistic Director of Splash
Circus Theatre (2002-2004) and then AcroSports
City Circus (2004-2007) where she coached young and aspiring circus artists as well as wrote, choreographed
and directed original circus- theatre productions.
Since 2000 Stephanie has written and directed 12 original, full- length productions, all of which have
received public and critical acclaim. She has also choreographed countless mime and circus pieces as
well as coached hundreds of recreational and professional students.
